Why I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity

Volunteering and giving back to the community I live in has always been very important to me. I believe that it is our responsibility as citizens of the world to be compassionate and help others in need in any way we can. I reap satisfaction and many benefits from volunteering my time for worthy causes. Once I started working for Whirlpool Canada, I realized that I would be able to continue the spirit of volunteerism in my professional life in addition to my personal life.

Since I joined the organization in 2012 I have had the opportunity participate in a Habitat for Humanity Build every single year on behalf of Whirlpool Canada. In my first year with the organization not only did I volunteer to participate on a build day, I was also fortunate enough to be part of the company’s internal Habitat for Humanity committee. Being part of this committee allowed me to learn more about the cause and truly understand Habitat’s mission, reach and impact on the lives of families across the world. I was able to represent Whirlpool (along with other committee members) at the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Hoskins Square build in Brampton, Ontario.  This was a fantastic experience.

I never miss the opportunity participate in Whirlpool Habitat build days. To date I have participated in 4 builds (1 in Brampton, 2 in Milton and 1 in Burlington).  Most recently, I participated in the Whirlpool Title Home’ build in Burlington. This is part of a 12-unit townhouse development and a landmark build, because it is Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga’s first accessible home, with an open floor plan. On the build day I worked on the interior of one of the townhomes doing wall insulation. Like always it was a fun day working with my colleagues and the wonderful Habitat staff.

I have learned a lot over the years through volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. I now know the names and basic operation of many tools that I had no clue of before and I also know what is involved in insulating a home. This ability to try new activities and learn new skills is one of the many reasons I continue to volunteer my time to Habitat for Humanity. However the main reason I will continue to support this cause is because there’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing that I may be making a lasting impact on the lives of deserving families.
