Summer Style Guide

Sheer Elements

As a style expert and mom to two boys – I’ve managed to find a somewhat harmonious balance between the seemingly incongruous aspects of my life. Looking stylish and modern is important to me – but busy days often do not allow for a wardrobe change between work & play.  Rough & tumble play and all around mess are a part of my life, and so, caring for my clothes is essential. I love to update my wardrobe with pieces that nod to key looks of the season, but I’m not interested in flash in the pan styles that I will soon tire of, I take care of my clothes because I want my pieces to last – every addition to my wardrobe has to fit into my personal style & the way I live (well mostly!) The must haves that I’m coveting this season are:

Before you panic, this sounds much more intimidating than it is in reality; I am not suggesting full exposure (hey I’m a mom of two!) in fact, when done at its best, sheer elements actually reveal very little. Balenciaga is one of my favorite runway examples of how to do it well. Dresses and skirts with a sheer lower hemline and strategic panels, suggest exposure, but are a sophisticated and covered up way to test-drive this look. Using a washable delicates bag with the delicate cycle of your Whirlpool® washer is an easy way to care for fine mesh that is often used as a sheer detail – you also want to be careful with jewellery – there’s nothing more annoying than snagging or hooking your favourite piece during a lively conversation!

The thought of wearing this colour can send shockwaves through women. One, it has a reputation of being unflattering. Two, is the fear of stains. For the first point – it’s time to put this misconception to rest – there is a spectrum of white and there is a shade for everyone. If a piece fits well it will flatter. Secondly, when you have a Whirlpool® washer, caring for your clothes is lot easier. Treat spills quickly – gently blot and let your washer do the hard work.

This season’s pastels are an amped up version of the sugary hues that may come to mind. What’s new this time around is the material that we’re seeing in these soft tones and how we’re wearing them. Tough materials like leather, denim and suede give pastels a cool spin and we’re piling on all different shades from the pastel spectrum at the same time. If that seems too much – one key piece will freshen up your summer wardrobe. I spotted this amazing leather jacket at the Winners showroom and used it in a segment on Steven & Chris – I love how the retailer mixed the pastels but it would look equally chic with white, a wild print – or with anything that you’d typically throw on with a denim jacket.

White Button Down

Here’s what I love about a white button down: it really is the ultimate co-star. It can dress up a look or play it down, it isn’t often centre stage but it does dictate the overall feel of a look. Right now, my favourite is an easy, boyfriend style, like this one from Hatch, that makes everything look a little bit cooler. Inherently casual, it’s perfect with shorts for laid back summer days, but throw on a blazer and you’ve have an effortless office appropriate option – right down to caring for it. Throw it in your Whirlpool® dryer and take advantage of the Advanced Moisture Sensing feature. The dryer stops at just the right time, helping to prevent overdrying and damge to fabrics, preserving the perfect fit to keep your clothes looking newer, longer.
